Traditional Raw banana poriyal | Vazhaikkai Poriyal

Vazhakkai Poriyal is a classic South Indian side dish made with raw bananas (plantains), tempered with spices, and finished with grated coconut. It is mildly spiced nutritious, and pairs beautifully with rice dishes like Milagai Killi SambarKarakuzhambu, rasam, or curd rice.

Raw Banana Poriyal

 

Ingredients needed for making Vazhakkai Poriyal

Vazhakkai - 2
Onions - 2
Garlic cloves - A handful
Red chilly - 3 nos.
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Salt as required.
Oil as required
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Urad dal -1 tsp
Ginger -1 inch piece finely chopped
A sprig of Curry leaves
Grated coconut - 2 tbsp.

Method for making Vazhakkai Poriyal

1. Peel the skin of plantain and chop them into small cubes. Keep this in water to prevent discoloration.

2. Add the cut plantains to water in a wide vessel by adding salt and turmeric powder and cook till they become soft and pliable. Do not overcook them.

3. Drain the water completely and keep it aside.

4. Heat oil in a kadai, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add urad dal and after it becomes golden brown, add  red chillies, garlic, ginger and curry leaves.

5. Then add the finely chopped onions and saute well.

6. Next add the plantains and mix well so that the plantains are coated well with the spices.

7. Fry them in a medium flame for about 15 minutes till they become roasted and crispy. You can add oil around if necessary.

8. Add grated coconut and mix gently. Cook for another minute and remove from heat.

Tips
Do not overcook the bananas; they should remain firm and not mushy.
For a spicier version, add a pinch of red chili powder.
Freshly grated coconut enhances the flavor and texture.
