Vengaya Bajji Recipe | Crispy South Indian Onion Bajji | Tea-time Snacks

Vengaya Bajji or Onion Bajji is a crispy and delicious South Indian evening tea-time snack, made with sliced onions, gram flour, rice flour, and aromatic spices. This easy Vengaya Bajji recipe is perfect for tea time and tastes best when served hot with coconut chutney or kothamalli chutney.


Onion Bajji

Ingredients for making Vengaya Bajji

2 cups Bengal gram flour, or kadalai maavu
2 tablespoons rice flour
3 onions
3 teaspoons chilli powder
½ teaspoon cooking soda
A pinch of asafoetida
Salt, as required
Approximately ½ cup water
Oil, for deep frying

Method  for making Vengaya Bajji

1. Peel the onions and slice them into thin round pieces.

2. In a bowl, combine Bengal gram flour, rice flour, chilli powder, asafoetida, cooking soda, and salt.

3. Add water gradually and mix to form a thick batter that coats the onion slices evenly.

4. Heat oil in a deep kadai over medium heat. Dip the onion slices into the batter, ensuring they are well coated. Carefully drop the coated onions into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crisp on both sides.

5. Remove the bajjis and place them on a paper towel to drain the excess oil.

Serve hot with coconut chutney or kothamalli chutney.
