Barnyard Millet Upma or Kuthiraivali Khichdi


Ingredients for making Barnyard Millet Upma 

Barnyard Millet / Kuthiravali Rice - 1 cup
Water - 3 cups
Onion - 2 nos.
Tomato - 1 no.
Mixed veggies - 1 cup  (Beans, Carrot, Peas, etc. )
Green Chillies , Chopped
Few Coriander leaves, Chopped
Salt, to taste
Grated coconut , optional
  
 To Temper
 Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
 Split  Urad dal - 1 tsp.
 Bengal Gram/ Chana Dal - 1 tsp.
 A pinch Turmeric powder       


Method for making Kuthiraivali Khichdi  / Millet Upma


1. Rinse Barnyard millet and soak in water for 10-15 mins . Drain water and keep aside.

2. Heat oil in a pressure pan add mustard seeds when it splutters add chana dal, urad dal and fry till they turn golden brown.

3. Next add curry leaves, chopped onions and  slit green chillies. Saute for a minute or two till the onion turns transparent. Now add chopped tomatoes and saute well.

4. Add finely chopped mixed veggies of your choice. Add some salt, turmeric powder and saute for 3-4 mins.

5. To that add required water. When the water starts boiling add the washed millets and required amount of salt. Close the pressure cooker and cook for 2 whistles.

6. Once pressure releases, open the cooker , add coriander leaves and grated coconut (optional) .

Enjoy hot Kuthiravali Khichdi with chutney or  sambar, or spicy podi.
