Karthigai Deepam is one of the oldest and most beautiful festivals celebrated in Tamil Nadu, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. Deepam involves lighting oil lamps in homes and temples to ward off evil and bring prosperity. Observed during the Tamil month of Karthigai (November–December), this festival fills homes and temples with the warm glow of oil lamps, creating a divine and serene atmosphere. The festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan. It is believed that on this day, Lord Shiva appeared as an endless flame to prove his supremacy, and hence devotees light lamps to honor that eternal light. In every Tamil household, rows of agal vilakkus (earthen lamps) are lit at dusk, adorning doorsteps, balconies, and courtyards. Special sweets like appam, puffed rice with jaggery (pori urundai), sarkkarai pongal, vadai, sundal and adhirasam are prepared and shared with family and friends.
