Maavilakku Recipe | How to make Maavilakku for Karthigai Deepam with rice flour

Maavilakku or Rice flour lamp is an edible lamp made for neivedyam in all houses. Maavilakku is made using readymade rice flour. You can also make the rice flour in home. Maavilakku is lighted on Karthigai Deepam, Tamil New Year, Purattasi Sani, Thai Velli, Aadi Velli, Diwali Nonbu and on all important poojas to the God.


Ingredients for making Maavilakku maavu

Rice flour/ arisi maavu  - 1/2 cup
Grated jaggery – 1/2 cup
Ghee – 2 to 3 tbsp 
Cardamom powder - 1/2 tsp

Things needed to make Maavilakku
Thread/thirinool - 1 no
Ghee - 2 tsp(melted)
Kumkum and turmeric - little

Method for making Maavilakku maavu

1. Take the rice flour and grated jaggery in a mixie jar. Pulse it for 3-4 times. Take care not to grind continuously.

2. Remove the contents from the mixie to a plate. Mix it well using your hands without any lumps.

3. Add ghee and cardamom powder and mix well. Always use melted ghee so that you can make the shape of lamp easily.

4. Now roll the flour to a ball shape and then shape it like a vilakku or lamp. 

5. Make a small dent in the center using your finger for pouring ghee. Seal with fingers if any crack appears.

Now the Maavilakku is ready.
