Rottukadai Thakkali Chutney

Ingredients needed for making Tomato Kaara Chutney 


Ripe tomatoes – 4
Onion – 1 large
Green Chillies - 3 nos.
Garlic cloves – 6
Ginger - small piece
A handful of Curry leaves
A handful of Coriander leaves
Red Chilli Powder - 1/2 tsp.
A pinch of hing

To Temper
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Urad dal – ½ tsp
Dry red chillies – 4 to 5
Gingely Oil – 2 tsp
Salt – to taste

How to Prepare Rottukadai Thakkali Chutney

1.Add the chopped tomatoes, onions, green chillies, garlic, ginger, curry leaves and coriander leaves with required amount of salt in a mixer and grind to a smooth paste. Add a little water if needed to adjust consistency.


2. Heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds, urad dal, red chillies and curry leaves. When they splutter, add the ground mixture and saute well.

3. Add red chilli powder and hing and saute well. Allow this to boil till the raw smell disappears. 


4. Yummy Delicious Rottukadai Thakkali Chutney is ready to be served with hot idli, dosa, or chapathi. It also pairs well with pongal or upma for a complete South Indian breakfast experience. 

Variation: You may also saute the ingredients in oil and then grind.
