Madurai Special Thanni Chutney | Thanni Chutney Side dish for Idli, Dosa and Vada

Madurai Thanni Chutney is one of the famous Chutney recipes of the Temple city of South India. As the name implies Thanni Chutney is watery in consistency but very flavorful and spicy. Madurai Thanni Chutney

Ingredients to make Madurai Famous Thanni Chutney


Grated Coconut - 1/4 cup
Roasted Gram - 1/2 cup
Small Onion - 8 nos
A handful for Curry Leaves
Green Chillies - 10 Nos
Salt as needed

To Temper
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
Split urad dal - 1 tsp.
Red chillies - 3 nos.
A sprig of curry leaves
Chopped onions - 1 tbsp.(optional)
Oil - 2 tsp.


How  to prepare Madurai Thanni Chutney


1. In a mixer grind coconut, fried gram, green chillies, small onions and needed salt. Grind into a fine paste.

2. Transfer this to a bowl and add 3 to 4 times of water to get a watery consistency. You can even reduce the water to 2 times as per your preference.

3. Heat oil in a kadai, splutter the mustard seeds and add urad dal. Add chopped onion, red chilli and curry leaves. Saute until onion becomes golden brown. 

Temper the chutney and mix well. 

Now the Madurai Thanni Chutney is ready to be served with Hot idli, dosa and Pongal.
