Khara Bath | Masala Rava Bath | Karnataka Breakfast Recipe

Khara Bath is a Popular Karnataka breakfast recipe loaded full of proteins, vitamins and carbohydrates. In Karnataka Khara bath is one of the important menu served in hotels along with kesari bath. Here rava is blended with onions, tomatoes and mix of veggies along with spice powders which give it a nice aroma and flavour.

Ingredients for making Karnataka Special Khara bath

Rava - 1 cup
A cup of Vegetables (potatoes, carrots, beans and peas)
A tbsp of Oil
A tbsp. of ghee
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
Urad dal  - 1 tsp.
Chana dal - 1 tsp.
Green chillies - 2
Onions - 2
Tomato - 1
Vangibath powder - 2 tsp.
finely chopped ginger 
A pinch of turmeric powder
Chopped coriander leaves

Method for making Khara bath

1. Roast the rava in 2 tsps of oil in a kadai till it turns to light brown in colour. Transfer this to a bowl and keep aside.

2. Heat oil and ghee in the same kadai, splutter the mustard seeds, add the urad dal and chana dal fry till brown. Add the sliced onions and saute till it becomes transparent.

3. Next add the chopped ginger and then the chopped tomatoes and chillies, saute well in a medium flame.

4. Add the finely chopped Vegetables, salt, turmeric powder and vangi bath powder (I used the ready made powder available in supermarkets) saute well and then add 1/2 cup of water and close with a lid. Allow this to boil for 5 minutes till the veggies are cooked.


5. After the veggies are cooked add 2 cups of water and allow it to boil.

6. Next add the fried rava and stir well occasionally and close with a lid and cook in a low flame.


7. Add 2 tsps. of ghee and Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Khara bath is ready to be served with Kesari bath and coconut chutney.
