Kuthiraivali / Barnyard Millet Rava idli is a healthy breakfast recipe which is prepared using Barnyard Millet and curd. Here the Kuthiraivali rice is ground to a rava consistency and then mixed with curd and then made just like normal rava idli recipe. It tastes well and is good for health. Millets are substituted in the place of  rice because it has got many health benefits. Millets are diabetic friendly and are also used for weight loss. Barnyard Millet Rava Idli

Ingredients for making Barnyard Millet Rava Idli

Kudiraivaali/ Barnyard Millet – 250 gm 
Curd - 1 cups
Water - 1/2 cup
Salt-to taste
Oil-2 tbs
Channa Dhal – 2 tbs
Broken Cashew nuts – 2 tbs
Mustard-1 tsp
Hing/ Asafoetida – a pinch
Curry Leaves – 2 sprigs
Baking Soda-1/2 tsp

Procedure for making Barnyard Millet Rava Idli


1. Heat a pan and dry roast the millet in a low flame till you get an aroma.

2. Allow it to cool and then transfer the contents to a mixer jar and grind it for 3-5 seconds until the rice is broken to rava consistency.

3. Heat oil in a pan and add channa dhal and cashew nuts roast until it becomes golden brown. Transfer to a plate.

4. To the same pan add in mustard, hing and curry leaves and when they crackle, add in the rava.

5. Roast it until the rava becomes slightly brown.

6. Remove from stove and allow it to cool.

7. Beat the curd, water and salt in a bowl and add it to the warm rava.

8. Mix well. Finally add baking soda and mix well.

9. Grease idli plates with little oil and fill them with the batter.

10. Steam cook for 15 minutes in a medium flame.

11. Remove from the flame and allow the plates to cool.

12.  Gently remove the idlis from the moulds.

Serve hot Barnyard Rava idli with any traditional chutney of your choice. Rava idli tastes yummy with White kurma.
