Kodo Millet Upma | Varagu Khichdi | Low Calorie Millet Recipe

Kodo Millet Upma / Varagu Khichdi is a delicious low calorie tasty and healthy Breakfast recipe which goes well with Coconut Chutney. Millets Upma is high in nutrition and is good for health. Here in this recipe I have added more vegetables which makes it more nutritious and colourful so that it gives a pleasing look to attract people of all ages.

Ingredients for making Kodo Millet Khichdi

Kodo Millet / Varagu - 1 cup
Water - 2 cups
Onion - 2 nos.
Tomato - 1 no.
Mixed veggies - 1 cup  (Beans, Carrot, Peas, etc. )
Green Chillies , Chopped
Few Coriander leaves, Chopped
Salt, to taste
Grated coconut , optional
 To Temper
 Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
 Split  Urad dal - 1 tsp.
 Bengal Gram/ Chana Dal - 1 tsp.
 A pinch Turmeric powder       

Method for making Varagu khichdi / Millet Upma

1. Rinse kodo millet / Varagu and soak in water for 10-15 mins . Drain water and keep aside.

2. Heat oil in a pressure pan add mustard seeds when it splutters add chana dal, urad dal and fry till they turn golden brown.

3. Next add curry leaves, chopped onions and  slit green chillies. Saute for a minute or two till the onion turns transparent. Now add chopped tomatoes and saute well.

4. Add finely chopped mixed veggies of your choice. Add some salt, turmeric powder and saute for 3-4 mins.

5. To that add required water. When the water starts boiling add the washed millets and required amount of salt. Close the pressure cooker and cook for 2 whistles.

6. Once pressure releases, open the cooker , add coriander leaves and grated coconut (optional) .

Enjoy hot Varagu Khichdi / Millet Upma with chutney or Sambar .
