Kalyana Veetu Kathirikkai Kootu | Brinjal kootu in Traditional Style

Kalyana Veetu Kathirikkai Kootu

Ingredients for making Kathirikkai / Brinjal Kootu


Chana Dal - 1/2 Cup
Garlic - 4 cloves
Chopped Onions - 1/2 cup
Brinjal - 5 nos
Green Chillies - 3 nos.
Red chilly powder - 1 tsp.
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Salt  as required
Coriander leaves - 2 Tbsp 
A sprig of curry leaves
Oil as required
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
Broken Urad Dal - 1/2 tsp
Jeera - 1/4 tsp
Dry Red chilli - 2

Method for making Brinjal Kootu


1. Pressure cook the chana dal for 3 whistles with 1 cup of water. Once done mash slightly. Do not mash like you do for Sambar the dal must be felt in each bite of the kootu. 

2. Chop the brinjal into small pieces and keep it immersed in water until use. Cut the green chillies lengthwise.

3. Heat a pan with oil, add the mustard and let it splutter and then add the broken urad dal and cumin seeds. Saute till the dal turns slightly golden brown. 

4. Add the chopped onions, garlic, red chillies and green chillies and saute for 5 minutes or until it turns translucent.

5. Now add the chopped brinjal, salt, turmeric powder and saute for 8 minutes.

6. Next add red chilly powder, grated coconut, curry leaves and coriander leaves and saute well for 4 to 5 minutes.

7. Now add the cooked channa dal and cook in a medium flame for 5 minutes. 

Turn off the flame, garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice, kaara kuzhambu and rasam.
