Avarakkai Kootu | Broad beans Kootu Recipe

Avarakkai Kootu or Broad beans kootu is a healthy side dish recipe which goes well with Kaarakuzhambu as well as chapathis. Avarakkai is cooked with gram dal and coconut paste that gives it a wonderful aroma. Usually many kids and even adults do not like Avarakkai poriyal but instead if you make this as kootu the kids will enjoy.

Avarakkai Kootu


Ingredients needed for making Avarakkai Kootu


Avarakkai / Broad beans - 1 cup finely chopped
Channa dhal - 1/2cup
Onion (chopped) - 1
Sambar powder - 1 tbsp.
Salt to taste
Oil as required

To Grind
Grated coconut - 4 tbsp.
Cumin seeds - 1tsp.
green chillies - 1

For the tempering
Mustard seed - 1 tsp.
Urad dhal - 1 tsp.
Red chilly - 1
Asafoetida - a pinch
A sprig of Curry leaves

Method for making Broad beans Kootu

1. Cook the channa dal with a pinch of turmeric powder in a pressure cooker for 3 to 5 whistles.

2. Remove the outer tough strings from the broad beans and finely chop them.

3. Add the chopped onions and avarakkai to the cooked dal along with sambar powder and salt and cook in a pressure cooker for 1 whistle.

4. Heat oil in a kadai splutter the mustard seeds, fry the urad dal and red chilly, add the curry leaves and now add the cooked contents from the cooker. For diabetic people you can omit coconut and grind the rest of the ingredients.

5. Mix well and then add the ground mixture. Leave this for a minute till everything gets blended well. 

Now the tasty Avarakkai kootu is ready.
