Tomato Biryani / Thakkali Biryani is a flavorful aromatic Indian style delicious biryani made using onions, tomatoes, spices, coriander leaves and Pudina leaves. Tomato biryani is an easy one pot rice recipe which is ideal for packing in lunchbox. Here I have shared the South Indian way of cooking Thakkali Biryani.

Ingredients needed to make Tomato Biryani
Basmati rice - 1 cups
Chopped Onions - 1 cup.
Chopped Tomatoes - 3 nos.
Ginger garlic paste - 1 tbsp.
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
Fennel seeds - 1 tsp
Green Chillies - 3 nos.
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp.
Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp.
Coriander powder - 1 tsp.
Salt as required.
A sprig of curry leaves
A handful of chopped pudina
A handful of chopped coriander leaves
Groundnut Oil - 3 tbsp.
Ghee - 1 tbsp.

Method for making Tomato Biryani
1. Wash the basmati rice and soak this in water for half an hour. Chop the onions and the tomatoes.
2. Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker add the mustard seeds and fennel seeds and then add the chopped onions. Saute till it becomes golden brown in colour.
3. Next add the ginger garlic paste and saute till the raw smell disappears.
4. Add the chopped tomato and mix well. Add the masala powders and salt and saute well till it becomes a thokku like consistency.
5. Add 1 1/2 cup of water allow it to boil and then add the soaked rice (make sure to drain the water).
6. Add the chopped coriander and pudina leaves and close the pressure cooker with the lid.
7. Allow it to cook in low flame for 10 minutes.
8. Now open the pan when the pressure is released.
Easy One pot Tomato Biryani is ready.
Hot Spicy Tomato Biryani is ready to be served.
