Cabbage Poricha Kootu | Muttaikose Kootu

Cabbage Kootu is one of the traditional lunch side dish recipe served in Tamil Nadu along with Kaara Kuzhambu and Appalam. Poricha kootu is made using cabbage, dals and grounded coconut paste. 

Cabbage Kootu

 

Ingredients needed for making Cabbage Kootu

Cabbage  - 2 cup finely chopped
Kadalai Paruppu / Channa dhal - 1/4 cup
Moong dal - 1/4 cup
Mustard seed - 1 tsp.
Split Urad dhal - 1 tsp.
Red chilly - 1
Fennel powder - 1 tsp.
A sprig of Curry leaves
Onion (chopped) - 1 no.
Tomato (chopped) - 1 no.
Red chilly powder - 1 tsp.
Green Chillies - 2 nos.
Salt to taste
Oil - 2 tsp

To Grind
Grated coconut - 4 tbsp.
Cumin seeds - 1tsp.
green chillies - 1



Method for making Cabbage Kootu / Kos kootu


1. Cook both the dals together with a pinch of turmeric powder in a pressure cooker for 3 whistles.

3. Heat oil in a kadai splutter the mustard seeds, fry the urad dal and red chilly, add the curry leaves and then add the chopped onions and saute well.

4. Next add the green chillies and chopped tomatoes saute till tomatoes become mushy.


5. Add the chopped cabbage and saute well. Next add the turmeric powder, salt, red chilly powder and allow this to cook in medium flame for 5 minutes. You can sprinkle water if needed.








6. Now add the above contents to the cooked dal in pressure cooker and cook for 2 whistles. 

7. When the pressure is released open the lid and mix the contents and then add the ground mixture. Leave this for a minute till everthing gets blended well. 


8. Finally add the fennel powder mix well. Switch off the flame and garnish with coriander leaves. 

Now the cabbage kootu is ready to be served with rice or chapathi.
