Millets Bonda | Kodo Millet Bonda | Varagu Arisi Bonda


Varagu Arisi Bonda / Kodo Millet Bonda is one of the healthy evening snack recipe. It is made using Kodo millet and chana dal.  This is one of the tasty crunchy tea-time snack recipe which will be loved by people of all ages. Varagu Bondas can also be served as a side dish to any Variety rice recipe. Goes well with Kaara Kuzhambu. These tiny Millet bondas can also be soaked in Mor Kuzhmabu to give it a great taste.

Kodo Millet Bonda


Ingredients for making Kodo Millet Bonda

Chana dal  - 1/2 cup
Kodo Millet - 1/2  tbsp.
A pinch of cooking soda
Ghee - 1tsp.
Salt as required
A spoon of ghee
Onions finely chopped - 1 cup
Green chilli - 1 no.
Ginger (finely chopped) - 1 tbsp.
Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp.
A sprig of Curry leaves
A small bunch of Coriander leaves (finely chopped)
Water as needed
Oil for deep frying

Method for making Varagu Bonda


1. Wash the kodo millet in water several times to remove the impurities and then soak it in water for 2 hours.

2. Soak Chana dal in water for 1 hour.

3. Drain the water form the kodo millet and grind it to a smooth batter. 

4. Drain the water from the soaked chana dal and add this to the kodo millet batter along with red chillies and salt.

5. Grind this to a coarse mixture. Transfer this to a wide vessel and add chopped onions, green chillies, ginger, curry leaves, coriander leaves and combine everything.

6. Now check the consistency it must look as a thick dosa batter.


7. Heat oil in a kadai and drop a ball size of the batter into the oil.

8. Fry this in medium flame till you get a golden brown colour.


Now the Varagu Bondas are ready to be served with Chutney or sauce.
