Traditional Appam Recipe - Homemade Appam without using Yeast - Easy Healthy Appam

Appam is my all time favorite dish which my mom makes every weekend. Appam tastes well with coconut milk and kurma. I usually like appam soaked in coconut milk. Here in this recipe I have not used yeast in this Appam recipe. The appam batter ferments naturally in hot climate as in Chennai. Appam goes well with Kadalai Curry. Ingredients needed for making Tamilnadu Appam

Idly rice 2 cups

Fenugreek seeds - ¼tsp.

Cooked rice -1/2 cup

Grated coconut - 1/2 cup

Water for grinding

A pinch of baking soda

Salt as required


Method  for making Tamilnadu Style Appam

1. Soak the rice and fenugreek seeds in water for two hours.

2. Drain the water from the rice. Grind all the ingredients using required amount of water in a grinder to make a smooth fine paste.

3. Add baking soda and mix well to combine.

4. Heat appam kadai or appa chatti until hot. Pour a ladle of batter into the kadai in the middle. Slowly rotate the pan to make the batter adhere to all over the sides of the pan.

5. Cover with a lid and allow to cook for a few seconds. When the sides become brown remove the appam. Appam is usually cooked only on one side. .

Serve hot with Coconut Milk, Kurma or Vadakari.
