Green Gram Gravy / Pachai Payaru Masala Curry - High Protein Side dish Recipe

Green Gram gravy or Pachai Payaru gravy is one of the easy to make Tiffin Side dish recipe which goes well with Idli, dosa and chapathi. Green Gram has got lots of health benefits. It lowers the level of LDL Cholesterol, Rich in proteins and iron, lowers blood pressure, rich in fiber and so good for diabetics. Try this simple green gram gravy using easily available ingredients.

Ingredients needed

Green gram - 1/2 cup
Tomatoes - 3 nos.
Turmeric powder -1/4 tsp
Chilli powder - 1 tsp
Coriander powder - 2 tsp
Salt as needed
Coriander leaves for garnishing

For grinding

Onion - 2 medium size
Green chilli - 1 no.
Garlic cloves - 4
Ginger - 1 inch piece

For the seasoning

Oil - 2 1/2 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Cumin/ jeera seeds - 1 tsp

Method for making green gram gravy

1.Wash and soak green gram dal overnight. Pressure cook by adding enough water and salt  for 3 whistles.

2. Chop the tomatoes and grind it into puree in a mixer.

3.Grind the ingredients given under to grind to a fine paste without adding water.

4. Heat oil in a pan, splutter the mustard seeds and cumin seeds, add the ground paste and saute well till the raw smell disappears.

5. Then add the tomato puree, turmeric powder, salt, chilli powder and coriander powder and saute well utill the oil is released.

6. Now add the cooked green gram saute for 5 minutes and then add 1/2 cup of water and allow it to boil for 10 minutes in low flame.

7. After 10 minutes garnish with coriander leaves.

Green gram gravy is ready to be served with hot dosas or chapathis of your choice,
