Durga: The Goddess of Protection

During the first three days of Navratri, devotees worship Goddess Durga. The name Durga represents protection, strength and security. Just as a moat protects a palace from external dangers, Goddess Durga protects her devotees from negativity and hardships.

Depending on its form, protection may be described as Jala Durga, meaning protection through water, or Agni Durga, meaning protection through fire. In Tamil tradition, Goddess Durga is also known as Kotravai, the ancient goddess of courage and victory.

Maha Lakshmi: The Goddess of Prosperity

The next three days of Navratri are dedicated to Goddess Maha Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, prosperity and abundance.

It is often believed that Maha Lakshmi resides in the heart of Lord Vishnu. However, tradition also teaches that she permanently blesses the home of anyone who welcomes guests with kindness, warmth and genuine hospitality.

Respecting guests, sharing food and practising generosity are considered signs of prosperity. A home filled with love and hospitality is believed to receive the blessings of Maha Lakshmi.

Saraswati: The Goddess of Wisdom

The final three days of Navratri are dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge, wisdom, learning and creativity.

Why is Saraswati worshipped at the end of Navratri? Life teaches us through both happiness and hardship. As the saying goes, experience brings wisdom. By facing different situations and learning valuable lessons from them, a person gains knowledge and maturity.

With the blessings of Goddess Saraswati, one can develop the wisdom, confidence and skills needed to live independently and lead a meaningful life.

Spiritual Significance of Navratri Worship

The worship of Durga, Maha Lakshmi and Saraswati represents the three essential stages of personal growth:

  • Durga gives us strength and protection.
  • Maha Lakshmi blesses us with prosperity and generosity.
  • Saraswati grants us knowledge and wisdom.

Together, these three forms remind us to build a life filled with courage, compassion, prosperity and wisdom.

Let us all celebrate this Navaratri and get the blessings of the Goddess.
