Coconut Halwa (also known as Thengai Halwa is a melt-in-your-mouth Indian sweet that holds a special place in festive celebrations, especially during Diwali and Lakshmi Pooja. This divine dessert combines the natural sweetness of fresh grated coconut with creamy milk and sugar, creating a rich, aromatic halwa that's both indulgent and surprisingly easy to make at home!


Growing up, I always looked forward to the days when my mom would make this thengai halwa, especially after festivals and poojas when we'd have an abundance of fresh coconuts at home. It's one of those traditional recipes that transforms leftover coconuts from religious ceremonies into a delicious offering that the whole family eagerly awaits. The best part? You don't need any fancy equipment or complicated techniques – just patience, fresh ingredients, and a little love!




Coconut Halwa

Ingredients needed for making Coconut Halwa

Grated Coconut - 1 cup
Milk - 1 cup
Sugar - 1/2 cup
Gram flour - 1 tbsp.
Cardamom powder - 1 tsp.
Ghee - 5 tbsp.
Condensed milk - 2 tbsp.
A pinch of saffron.

Method for making Coconut Halwa

1. Heat 2 tbsp. of ghee in a pan fry the gram flour till you get a nice aroma. Stir well.
2. Add the grated coconut and blend everything together for 2 minutes in a low flame.
3. Next add milk, allow this to boil and stir well continuously till it gets thicker.
4. At this stage add sugar and condensed milk and stir well for 3 minutes in medium flame.
5. Now add the cardamom powder, saffron and the remaining ghee and stir well.
6. Switch off the flame and garnish with cashews and almonds.
Now the tasty Coconut Halwa is ready to be served.
