Chennai Style Raw banana Fry | Vazhakkai Varuval

Vazhakkai varuval is a spicy crispy varuval variety made using raw banana. Here the raw banana are sliced and coated with masalas and fried using oil. Vazhakkai varuval is an excellent accompaniment for Sambar sadam, kootu or rasam. It also goes well with Puliyotharai or any variety rice recipe.

Ingredients for making Vazhakkai varuval

Raw banana - 1 no
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
Saunf - 1tsp.
Pepper powder - 1 tsp.
Gram flour - 1 tbsp.
Red Chilly powder - 1 tsp.
Coriander powder - 1 tsp.
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp.
Ginger-Garlic paste - 2 tbsp.
2 sprigs of Curry leaves
Salt to taste
Oil as required.

Method for making Vazhakkai varuval

1. Peel the skin of the raw banana, cut them into thin vertical slices.

2. Take the Raw banana slices in wide botommed vessel add the ginger garlic paste, salt, chilly powder, coriander powder, gram flour and turmeric powder and mix them well so that the raw banana slices coat well with the masala on all sides.

3. Coat each slice nicely with masala and set aside for 20 to 30 minutes.

4. Heat oil in a tawa and place the masala coated vazhakkai slices on the oil and fry till golden brown on both sides.

5. Heat oil in a kadai add the mustard seeds, saunf and curry leaves, now add the roasted raw banana slices and saute well. 

Now the Crispy Vazhakkai / Raw Banana Chops is ready to be served.
