Tomato Biryani | Thakkali Biryani | One Pot Biryani | Lunch Recipe

Tomato Biryani or Thakkali Biryani is one of the easy to make One Pot Biryani Recipe which can be made within minutes. Here Tomatoes are blend with spices and basmati rice to give a nice flavour and aroma. Try this Yummy Tomato Biryani and enjoy with any vegetable curry or Raita.

Tomato Biryani

Ingredients needed to make Tomato Biryani

Basmati rice - 2 cups
Onions - 2 nos.
Tomatoes - 4 nos.
Ginger garlic paste - 1 tbsp.
Fennel seeds - 1 tsp
Cinnamon - 1
Cloves - 3 nos.
Bay leaf - 1 no
Turmeric powder - 1 tsp.
Red Chilli Powder - 1 tsp.
Coriander powder - 1 tsp.
Salt as required.
Coconut milk - 2 cups.
A handful of chopped pudina
A handful of chopped coriander leaves
Oil - 1 tbsp.
Ghee - 1 tbsp.

Method for making Tomato Biryani


1. Wash the basmati rice and soak this in water for half an hour. Chop the onions into thin lengthwise pieces and puree the tomatoes in a mixer.

2. Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker add the masala ingredients one by one and the add the chopped onions. Saute tillit becomes golden brown in colour.

3. Next add the ginger garlic paste and saute till the raw smell disappears.

4. Add the tomato puree and mix well. Add the masala powders and salt and saute well.

5. Add 1 cup of water and 2 cups of coconut milk allow it to boil and then add the soaked rice (make sure to drain the water).

6. Add the chopped coriander and pudina leaves and close the pressure cooker with the lid.

7. Allow it to cook for 2 whistles in medium flame.

8. Now open the pan when the pressure is released.

Hot Spicy Tomato Biryani  is ready to be served.
