Chettinad Kara Chutney | Paniyaram Chutney | Spicy Red Chilli Onion Tomato Chutney

Chettinad Kara Chutney is a very popular Chettinad Chutney which pair well with Kara Paniyaram, idli, dosa, pongal or even for chapathi and poori. Onions and tomatoes are blend with garlic, red chillies and tamarind to give a spicy tangy taste. Here I have used vara milagai to give a reddish look you can also use dry red chillies. Try this authentic Chettinad chutney and enjoy.

Ingredients for making Kara Chutney

Tomato – 2 nos

Big onion – 3 no

Bydagi chilli / vara milagai / Red chillies – 5 nos 

Garlic cloves – 4 nos

Salt as needed

Tamarind - Small piece

To temper

Cooking oil – 1 tsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves - few


Method for making Kara Chutney

1. Chop the onions, tomato and garlic to fine pieces.

2. Grind the chopped onions, tomatoes, garlic and red chillies along with tamarind and salt to a smooth paste.

3. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, when it splutters, add curry leaves and the ground paste.

4. Cook on medium flame until the mixture oozes out oil.
